The Raiders became the AFL franchise holder in the year 1960 and joined the NFL in 1970 merger. The team was an incompetent franchise in its formative years playing in Frank Youell Field. But towards the end of 1960s it emerged as an AFL's one of the strongest team. It also became the professional football's the most consistent team. The team played their most of the pre-season games against The Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs as an AFL team. In the year 1967, the club conquered the 1967 AFL Championship with Al Davis as their head coach. He reorganized the Raiders and gradually the team started heading towards success. The superstars of the 1967 NBA Championship were Clem Daniels , Billy Cannon , Hoot Gibson , Art Powell , Daryle Lamonica and George Blanda. Davis after becoming the Commissioner of the AFL became a driving force to in taking the AFL to the competitive levels. It was only because of his efforts that forced the NFL to merge with the younger league.

The Raiders lost their first NFL Championship playoffs to the Green Bay Packers in 1968. in 1970 with the merger of AFL-NFL the Raiders joined the West Division of the American Football Conference. In 1969, John Maden took over the coaching responsibilities and helped the Raiders to become one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. With his assistance, the Raiders won their 1977 Super Bowl XI against the Minnesota Vikings. In 1982, the Raiders shifted to Los Angeles, California to play their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum . The procurement of Bo Jackson in 1986 resulted in the withdrawal of the Raiders star runnin back Marcus Allen. This led to the descent of the club both on the field and off the field. Even Jackson received a career-ending injury. The diappointed Raiders in the same season moved to Oakland. By 2000, the Raiders started to get their due recognition with attainment of their star quarterback Rich Gannon and leading receiver Jerry Rice.
